Zwei Jahre nach Girl at the End of the World scheint die legendäre Gruppe aus Manchester mit Living in Extraordinary Times in keinerlei Weise Staub angesetzt zu haben. Wenn man diesen Namen James bloß hört, taucht gleich eine ganze Epoche vor unseren Augen auf und man erkennt herrliche Eroberungen: 15 Alben, ein für dieses England zu Beginn der 90er Jahre typischer Brit-Pop-Sound und vor allem unvergessliche Hits wie etwa Come Home, Sit Down, She’s A Star oder Laid… Als der Leader Tim Booth im Jahre 2001 ausstieg, bedeutete dies das Ende dieses 1982 begonnenen Abenteuers. Bei allen Fans löste aber die Neuformierung im Jahre 2007 zwei recht unterschiedliche Reaktionen aus. Auf der einen Seite gab es Euphorie. Auf der anderen Seite hatte man Angst, alte Opis auf der Bühne zu sehen. Dem war jedoch nicht so. James hat genauso viel Energie wie zu Beginn und Living in Extraordinary Times ist der Beweis dafür. James ist nie allzu schüchtern und im Opener Hank erklingen Trommeln von Stammesangehörigen, wobei er beschreibt, was im modernen Amerika alles schief läuft. Ein, zwei, drei und Trump wird gesteinigt! Booth geht es aber nicht nur um Lynchjustiz. Wenn er in Coming Home part 2 - einer Art spirituellen Fortsetzung des überaus erfolgreichen Come Home - seinem Vater huldigt, zeigt er sich gefühlvoll und ehrlich. In dem Song, der mit einem elektronischen Beat beginnt, erzählt er davon, wie schwierig es ist, weit weg von seiner Familie zu leben und die wichtigen Ereignisse im Leben eines Vaters zu versäumen. Dieser Liebesbrief wird mit Leif Tildens einfachem, authentischem Clip nur noch herzergreifender… James verstand es immer schon, hochqualitative Radiohits zu komponieren, die einem nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen. Many Faces mit akustischen Schlägen und Bläsern, auf die ein am Synthesizer gespieltes Elektromotiv folgt, versetzt uns in Trance. Am Ende eines perfekten Crescendos entdeckt man göttlichen Chorgesang, mit dem man ins Jenseits abtaucht. Egal, ob die Gruppe aus Manchester einen schmerzvollen, pessimistischen oder einen fröhlichen Gesang anstimmt, sie hält sich an eine einzige Devise: „Zusammen schaffen wir es“ kann man im Finale des Better Than That hören. © Clara Bismuth/Qobuz
