After a brush with Manchester’s reggae/dub (and even dub techno) scene during the 2010s alongside his comrade Eeyun Purkins, singer Joe Yorke has become known over the past few years for a series of singles that fall somewhere between rocksteady, roots reggae, and soul, in particular with Breton group Stand High Patrol. On gems like “Quicksand”, we came to discover his incredible falsetto, nestled between that of Junior Murvin and Cedric Myton.
A high-pitched tone that he discovered during a studio session in 2015, and he’s never gone back since. It goes without saying that his voice does wonders on old school ska tracks, and on this new album, Hopeless (his third from his own label Rhythm Steady), he is very, very good in other genres as well, like the magnificent “Dreaming”, more Northern soul in spirit. But it’s of course on reggae tracks that the currently Bristol-based singer takes flight, delivering a real treasure trove for keeping warm by the fire this winter, from “Man”, to the rocksteady track “Hopeless Lover” (featuring Italian Marina P), to the crown jewel that is “Crazy Love”, with Solo Banton playing the bad boy role.
