Die Diskografie von John Lee Hooker ist wie ein Labyrinth. Über ein Jahrzehnt lang (von 1948 bis in die frühen 60er-Jahre) nahm der Bluesmusiker stets als Solokünstler Hunderte von Stücken für verschiedene Labels und unter einer Handvoll bedeutender Namen auf. Sein Boogie Blues ist einzigartig: magnetisch, ausgehungert, umherirrend und erotisch, außerhalb der konventionellen Strukturen des Blues, archaisch und avantgardistisch zugleich, an der Grenze zur Improvisation und im Herzen der reinen Kreativität. Und dann, 1961, mit Boom Boom, wurde alles offenbart, das Labyrinth wurde zum Tanz, zur Selbstverständlichkeit. Die Originalversion dieses Songs, John Lee Hookers ultimativer Hit und einer der Totems des modernen Blues, eröffnet das Album Burnin'. Zum ersten Mal nahm John Lee Hooker ein Album gemeinsam mit einer Band auf, mit Mitgliedern der Funk Brothers, den Hausmusikern des Motown-Labels. Endlich gab es da Jungs, die in der Lage waren, John Lee Hookers wilder Inspiration zu folgen oder sie in die richtigen Bahnen zu lenken. Boom Boom, wie ein unnachahmlicher Tanz zwischen zwei Boxern, abgehackt und mitreißend zugleich, wurde zu etwas bereits Bekanntem: die Matrix des englischen Rhythm'n'Blues (von den Animals bis zu Dr. Feelgood haben es alle gecovert), das Fundament von ZZ Top, der Soundtrack für John Lee Hookers Comeback im Film The Blues Brothers im Jahr 1980... Kurzum, ein Neuanfang für den elektrischen Blues, der sich bis heute nicht davon erholt hat. Burnin', das zum 60. Jahrestag seines Erscheinens neu veröffentlicht wurde, besteht nicht nur aus Boom Boom, sondern reiht die groovigen und sexy Stücke aneinander, die den Bluesman in das Zeitalter des Rock gebracht haben.
