Niecy Blues

Niecy Blues' meditative, atmospheric songs blend R&B, ambient, gospel, and indie rock influences. The South Carolina-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist employs looped vocal improvisations and haunting delay in order to create genre-blurring music that is devotional, ethereal, and intoxicating all at once. Following several years of sporadic short-form releases and guest appearances, Niecy released her entrancing debut album, Exit Simulation, on Kranky in 2023. Janise Robinson grew up in a religious household in Oklahoma, and credits the hypnotic power of church music as a formative influence. She moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and took her time refining her skills as a songwriter and performer. As Niecy Blues, she occasionally released songs online and was featured on tracks by other artists. A downtempo R&B single titled "Ways," produced by Contour, surfaced in 2018, and the much more atmospheric three-song EP CRY arrived in 2020. She appeared on Contour's 2021 album Love Suite, and her lo-fi pop song "Bones Become the Trees" was released by Mexican Summer in November of the same year. Niecy signed to Kranky and issued her debut album, Exit Simulation, in 2023. The release featured additional production by Contour as well as appearances by KeiyaA and harpist Mary Lattimore.
