Louisa Stancioff

Louisa Stancioff's intimate, soft-focus reflections meet at the crossroads of alt-country, indie folk, and the more meditative output of cited influences like Lou Reed, Cowboy Junkies, and Faye Webster. Themes of heartbreak and uncertainty permeated her full-length debut, 2024's When We Were Looking. Born and raised in rural Maine, Stancioff grew up singing roots music with friends; she also learned traditional Bulgarian songs from her paternal grandfather's side of the family. She eventually toured in a band called Dyado (a play on "diado," Bulgarian for "grandfather") with her cousin. After a few years in the band, she set out on her own, working up her guitar skills and writing her own songs while moving around the country and working odd jobs in places as far-flung as Maine, Alaska, and Southern California. As she accumulated songs steeped in uncertainty, Stancioff met Maine-based producer/multi-instrumentalist Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Lake Street Dive) at one of her shows, and she took up residence in Maine again (at her late grandfather's house) in order to work with him. She and Kassirer began tracking her debut album at his Great North Sound Society studio, a converted farmhouse in the small town of Parsonsfield, with only a handful others, mostly drummers, joining them on select tracks. Featuring touches of country, folk, psychedelia, and a heavy heart, the completed When We Were Looking arrived on Yep Roc in April 2024.
