Lara Liang

Born in California on May 2nd, 1988 to Taiwanese and Russian-American parents, bilingual singer-songwriter Lara Liang relocated to Taipei as a teenager, where she honed her craft as a Mandarin-language pop starlet. In 2005, she made her breakthrough after meeting national Mandopop star Jay Chou, who teamed up with her on the the hit single “珊瑚海” (“Coral Sea”) and invited her to join his Sony-signed band, Nan Quan Mama. Continuing to serve as the group’s frontwoman over the course of four albums, she struck gold with 2008’s “下雨天” (“Rainy Day”), which reached #3 in the Chinese Singles Charts. Shortly thereafter, however, Liang redefined herself as a soloist, stepping up her creative input in all respects. Her debut album, HELLO, arrived in 2010, and was followed by the 2012 effort 自由靈魂 (Free Spirit). Parting ways with Chou’s JVR Music the next year, she set up her own label, Meimeiwawa Multimedia, with her sister Esther, under which she began to experiment with her sound. Wearing her heart on her sleeve in her more recent tracks, Liang has touched upon everything from LGBTQ+ issues to disordered eating in her lyrics, singing atop eclectic productions ranging from dancehall-pop to dubstep. Her third LP, 千面獸 (Thousand-Faced Beast), landed in 2018, with an EDM-oriented remix EP entitled RE eventually emerging two years later. 2020 also saw her release “心之所向”, the theme from TV show Minor March.
