Huw Williams
Organist and choral conductor Huw Williams is the director of music at England's Bath Abbey in South West England and is frequently heard as a touring player. He has also been active in the U.S. and has made recordings both as an organist and as a choir director.
Williams was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1971. He attended the Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera school in Wales, studying piano, and he was forbidden to play the organ at a local chapel for fear he might damage the instrument. His performing career began on piano at Eisteddfod Welsh music festivals, but a teacher suggested that he return to the organ, and the young Williams, anxious for the multiple-times-per-week exposure organists often received, agreed. He attended Christ College, Cambridge, as an organ scholar and went on for further study at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1993, he served as an organ scholar at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. His first professional job was as assistant organist at Hereford Cathedral, where he served from 1995 to 1998. In 1999, Williams made his recording debut, appearing on the Hyperion album The English Anthem, Vol. 7. That year, he became Sub-Organist at St. Paul's, performing and recording on its organ. His solo debut, Christmas Organ Music from St. Paul's Cathedral, came in 2004 on the Priory label. Two years later, he released Organ Spectacular from St. Paul's Cathedral on the Guild label.
In 2008, Williams moved to the U.S. to become Director of Music at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia. He remained active in Britain, recording with the famed small choir The Sixteen as accompanist. In 2017, he was named the director of music at Bath Abbey, performing on its new organ and taking charge of its multiple choirs. He remained in that position as of the early 2020s. Williams has continued to record, accompanying the Choir of the Chapel Royal on the 2016 album Adeste Fideles: Christmas Carols from Her Majesty's Chapel Royal. In 2022, Williams made his first recording with the Choir of Bath Abbey, releasing the album Caritas: Music of Love, Hope, Charity and Consolation on the Regent label.
