Hertfordshire Chorus

The 130-member Hertfordshire Chorus performs not only in its home county north of greater London but in top venues around Britain. The group has provided choral singers for several BBC television shows. The Hertfordshire Chorus was formed in 1970 as the Hatfield Philharmonic Chorus; it was associated with the Hatfield Philharmonic Orchestra (now the Hatfield Philharmonic Society). The orchestra and chorus were both conducted by Frank Shipway. He was succeeded in 1973 by Michael Kibblewhite. The chorus split from the orchestra, taking its present name and collaborating thenceforth with various orchestras in choral-orchestral music. Kibblewhite led the Hertfordshire Chorus in its 2000 debut album, a recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. In September of that year, David Temple succeeded Kibblewhite as music director, and he remained in that position as of the mid-2020s. Thus, for all but three of its more than 50 years of existence, the choir has had only two directors. The Hertfordshire Chorus is deeply rooted in its community, performing frequently at St. Albans Cathedral and supplying choral singers for weddings and funerals in the Hertfordshire area, but it has a national and even international reputation as well. The group has performed at such major British venues as the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican in London. Hertfordshire Chorus singers have been heard in the BBC television programs The Choir and The One Show. The group's repertory includes traditional works such as Fauré's Requiem, which it performed live on BBC Radio 2's Good Friday programming, and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Op. 123. However, the chorus is also known for commissioning new music, having worked with such composers as Will Todd, Orlando Gough, and Steve Block. The Hertfordshire Chorus has collaborated with pop artists, including Bombay Bicycle Club, Noel Gallagher, and Ray Davies of The Kinks. The chorus has made several recordings for Lyrita and Signum Classics, issuing Nova! Nova! Joy to the World on the latter in 2023.
