Further
Led by brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker, the mid-'90s indie pop outfit Further transformed from an earlier band, Shadowland, who issued a pair of albums for the Geffen label before being dropped and changing their name and sound. Whereas Shadowland were based in '60s music, Further were more into making lots of lo-fi noise à la Dinosaur Jr. Along with drummer Kevin Fitzgerald and guitarist Josh Schwartz, the Rademaker brothers began cranking out singles for small labels like Christmas and Lissys, while issuing albums (Griptape in 1992, Sometimes Chimes in 1993, Grimes Golden in 1994) and EPs at a steady clip. Fitzgerald left the band after Grimes Golden, leaving the others to rotate on the drums. Their final recording, 1996's Japan-only EP Next Time West Coast, hinted toward the more psychedelic country style the brothers would pursue in their next project. After splitting up Further, Brent and Darren formed the Buffalo Springfield-esque group the Tyde, while Brent also formed the country-pop group Beachwood Sparks with Further auxiliary member Christopher Gunst.
