Arthur Moreira Lima
Arthur Moreira-Lima has become a largely forgotten name in the twenty first century, but his talent and credentials as one of the leading pianists of his generation are undeniable. He is often associated with the music of Chopin, though his repertory has been broad over the years, taking in works by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Brazilian tango/crossover composer Ernesto Nazareth, and numerous others. Moreira-Lima has given many concert tours across the globe, including in England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Canada, the U.S., and South America and has been especially well received in Russia and Poland. He has garnered wide critical acclaim for his numerous recordings, among which are several highly praised discs of Chopin's solo pieces as well as the entire output for piano and orchestra. Moreira-Lima has become a champion, of sorts, for the piano music of Villa-Lobos, having recorded three discs of his works and having given the first performances of his Piano Concerto No. 1 in Russia, Japan, Austria, and Germany. Moreira-Lima has recorded for Vanguard, Melodiya, Polskie Nagrania/Muza, Vivace, and Olympia.
Arthur Moreira-Lima was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 16, 1940. He began studying the piano at six with Lúcia Branco, and at nine won a major competition held by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, a victory that allowed him to perform a Mozart piano concerto in concert with the BSO.
From 1960, he studied in Paris with Marguerite Long and Jean Doyen, and though he failed to win prizes at two prestigious events in 1962 -- the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris and the Van Cliburn Competition -- he went on, after studies in Moscow with Rudolf Kerer (1963-1968), to finish second behind Martha Argerich in the 1965 Chopin Competition in Warsaw.
Moreira-Lima finished third in the 1969 Leeds Competition and third again in the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow the following year. After his impressive finish at the Tchaikovsky, Moreira-Lima began regular concert tours across the globe and made many successful recordings, including the several highly acclaimed Chopin discs for Vanguard. Moreira-Lima has remained busy on the concert scene ever since, giving many recitals in the new century throughout the more remote regions of Brazil. In 1997 he achieved a long-held dream, when he recorded a disc of Piazzolla transcriptions for the Olympia label. The CD was released in 1999 and received broad international acclaim.
