Nach der Best Of-Platte "The Collection" im vergangenen Jahr, die sich weltweit über sieben Millionen mal verkaufte, schenkt Tracy Chapman ihren zahlreichen Fans jetzt ein Dutzend neuer Songs. Back To The Roots lautet das Motto ihrer sechsten Soloscheibe, denn mit "Let It Rain" kehrt die afroamerikanische First Lady of Folk zu ihren Songwriter-Wurzeln zurück.
Wer jetzt kein Haus baut, baut sich keines mehr, wusste schon Rainer Maria Rilke, und so bietet Tracy ihren Hörern pünktlich zum Herbst den passenden Soundtrack für die trübsinnige Jahreszeit. Melancholisch-minimalistische Balladen dominieren über weite Strecken das Werk, und den John Cougar Mellencamp-Rock vom 2000er Album "Telling Stories" sucht man zum Glück vergebens.
Nun stehen endlich wieder Chapmans grandiose Stimme und ihr zartes Spiel an der Akkustikgitarre im Vordergrund. Man fühlt sich zuweilen gar an ihr selbstbetiteltes Debut aus dem Jahre '88 erinnert, nur mit dem Unterschied, dass sich auf "Let It Rain" keine eingängigen Hits à la "Fast Car" oder "Baby Can I Hold You" befinden. Heuer ersetzen eher vorsichtige Soul-, Country- und Gospel-Sounds den damaligen Pop-Appeal.
So meldet sich beim beswingten "You're The One" ein Mark Knopfler-Gedächtnis-Riff zu Wort, und auf dem abwechslungsreichen "Hard Wired" erklingt neben der Country-Gitarre gar ein Akkordeon. "Say Hallelujah" dagegen ist lupenreiner Gospel, und mit "Another Sun" wildert Miss Chapman im Soul-Genre, ohne jedoch ihre schüchterne Folk-Linie zu verlassen, die sich auch in den Texten widerspiegelt.
Mit wenigen Worten entfaltet Tracy Chapman mehr Intensität und Tiefgang als manche Kollegen im Verlauf ihrer gesamten Karriere. Sie singt über den Tod ("Another Sun"), hofft auf Gott ("Let It Rain") und widmet sich der Liebe ("I am Yours"). Nur bei "Hard Wired" bricht Tracy ein wenig aus dem persönlichen Themenkomplex aus und vertont ihre Angst vor der Gedankenkontrolle der modernen Medien.
