Während Paul's Boutique überzeugend bewiesen hatte, dass die Beastie Boys keine bierselige Novelty-Rap-Gruppe waren, stellte das Nachfolgealbum ebenso überzeugend klar, dass die Beastie Boys nicht nur eine Rap-Gruppe waren. Check Your Head wendet sich in mehrerer Hinsicht gründlich von seinem Vorgänger und dem bisherigen Charakter ab. Zunächst einmal ist es das am wenigsten lyrische ihrer ersten fünf Alben und auf keinem anderen gibt es annähernd so viele ultra-dichte Sample-Collage-Referenzen. Außerdem greift Check Your Head auf eine frühere Version der Beastie Boys zur Zeit ihrer ursprünglichen Hardcore-Punk-Anfänge zurück. Die Tatsache, dass sie ihre alten Instrumente auspackten und kurz-schnell-laute Riff-Rap-Ausbrüche jammten, brachte nicht nur die Beasties von vor zehn Jahren wieder mit ihrer freien Gruppenidentität in Kontakt, sondern traf auch den Nerv der "Alt"-Kultur, die versuchte, Nirvana, Dr. Dre und die Red Hot Chili Peppers unter einen Hut zu bringen. Dabei machte die Lautstärke von Check Your Head die schräge Jamsession-Zotteligkeit bei Weitem wett: Knackige Rap-Rock-Hits wie Pass the Mic und So What'cha Want verwandeln ihre Licensed to Ill-Rotzigkeit in Skatepunk-Chic, ihre verstärkte Circle-Pit-Aufnahme von Sly & the Family Stone's Time for Livin ist ein inspirierter Hardcore-Ausbruch, und die Hinzunahme von "Money" Mark Nishita als Stamm-Keyboarder der Crew half den Beasties, einen inspirierenden neuen Weg als überraschend dichte Garage-Funk-Instrumental-Combo zu gehen. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
