Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko is the latest in a group of young performers championed by the revived Sony Classical label. She's got personality to spare, and, from the looks of the pictures, charisma, too. Arabesque seems to be an album designed to showcase her suitability for a wide variety of roles; the program runs from Mozart forward through the 19th century and includes the Italian, French, and German languages (not that you get any of the texts in the CD booklet). She's certainly versatile and seems to have fun with most of the music, and she bears watching as a rising star. This said, there's just one type of aria in which Peretyatko really stands out, and that's the vigorous diva number that lets her voice bloom effortlessly into its upper range in rapid, churning material. The Mozart concert aria Ah se in ciel, K. 538, that opens the program is a fine example, as is Verdi's Mercè, dilette amiche from I Vespri siciliani. In this kind of material the voice simply doesn't reveal any weak points, and it's tremendously exciting. It seems almost to become unmoored from the key in climactic passages without ever getting out of control, and the effect of that is uncanny. Slow things down in something like the Villanelle of Belgian soprano-composer Eva Dell'Acqua, and Peretyatko is competent, but not as riveting and not as powerful. There is nevertheless a sufficient number of really brilliant flashes here to make the voice-seekers sit up and take notice.

Jonas Kaufmann en 10 disques essentiels

Avec son physique avantageux de jeune premier romantique, l’Allemand Jonas Kaufmann a modernisé l’image du ténor d’opéra, souvent considéré comme un bateleur impénitent. Outre sa voix puissante et variée, Jonas Kaufmann possède un répertoire immense, en plusieurs langues, à l’aise à l’opéra dans Wagner comme dans Verdi ou Puccini, chantant le lied ou l’opéra français à merveille. Grand admirateur de Fritz Wunderlich, il a commencé sa carrière “à l’ancienne”, en troupe dans de petits théâtres allemands avant de voler de ses propres ailes vers une carrière phénoménale. Après une année 2017 chaotique due à un hématome sur les cordes vocales, Jonas Kaufmann semble parfaitement rétabli et travaille sur de très nombreux projets. En 10 disques, Qobuz tente de couvrir toutes les facettes de son immense talent.

Le Teatro Massimo, trésor palermitain

Qobuz a récemment fait le voyage à Palerme pour rencontrer la Diva Angela Gheorghiu, qui y chantait Adrienne Lecouvreur au Théâtre Massimo. Appelons le théâtre par son nom complet : le Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele ! Il est installé affectivement et géographiquement au cœur de la capitale sicilienne. Contemporain de l’Opéra Garnier, c’est un monument grandiose construit dans le goût néoclassique qui fleurissait un peu partout dans le monde à la fin du 19ème siècle. C’est le plus vaste opéra d’Italie et le troisième opéra d’Europe après ceux de Paris (Palais Garnier) et de Vienne. Nous avons rencontré Francesco Giambrone, sovrintendante del Teatro Massimo…
