Vincent Neil Emerson

An earthy and earnest country singer/songwriter, Vincent Neil Emerson follows the path carved out by such fellow Texan troubadours as Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson and maintained by Charley Crockett. Emerson's soft drawl complements his taste in country, whether he's singing hard country for a barroom or crooning plaintive ballads. He initially embraced his retro roots on such albums as his 2019 debut, Fried Chicken & Evil Women, and his eponymous Rodney Crowell-produced record from 2021. Emerson started to broaden his palette into Americana with 2023's Shooter Jennings-produced album The Golden Crystal Kingdom. A native of East Texas of Native American lineage who wound up in Fort Worth, Emerson had a rough childhood: he lost his father to suicide, leaving him to be raised by a single mother in poverty. Initially a fan of punk rock, he gravitated toward folk and country as he grew older. He was particularly attracted to the music of Townes Van Zandt, songs that inspired him to start playing music in local clubs and dives while he was still in his teens. After releasing the indie albums Flyin' High and East Texas Blues, he started to amass a following in the Fort Worth area. Emerson signed with La Honda Records for Fried Chicken & Evil Women, the 2019 album that helped him to break wider than Texas. He gained fans, primarily among other musicians but also earning the attention of Jason Momoa. Rodney Crowell came aboard to produce Vincent Neil Emerson, the sophomore set that came out on La Honda Records/Thirty Tigers in 2021. Emerson hit the road in support of his first two major records, usually in tandem with such kindred spirits as Colter Wall and Charley Crockett. He tipped his hat toward rock on Live at Luck Mansion EP in 2022, which featured a rendition of Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand," leading him to team with producer Shooter Jennings for The Golden Crystal Kingdom, an album that came out on RCA in November 2023.
