María Martha Serra Lima

With a repertoire that consisted mainly of love ballads and boleros, Argentine singer and actress María Martha Serra Lima (December 19, 1944) went on to become one of the most prominent exponents of the canción melódica genre. Born in the city of Buenos Aires, she began singing professionally at the age of 27 following her father's death. After landing her first major-label contract in 1977, she went on to achieve international fame in 1980 with the chart-topping single "Dudo Lo Que Pasa (Qué Es Lo Que Tiene Él)," included in her fourth LP Entre Nosotros. "La Flor de la Canela," another track from the album, also enjoyed great popularity across Latin America. In the following years, she scored another hit with the collaborative album Esencia Romántica (1981), recorded with Mexico's Trío Los Panchos. A second volume titled Esencia Romántica 2 appeared in 1984. Her success carried over to the early 90s with titles like Cosas de la Vida, whose title track featured a duet with romantic crooner Sandro. María Martha International, her last studio album, appeared in 2013. She passed away on November 2, 2017, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
