Los Blenders

Mexican garage rock band Los Blenders mix and match the punk aspects of garage, the reverb-heavy twang of surf music, the trippy textures of psychedelia, and some of the modern punch of bands like the Strokes. Early recordings showed off the joyously sloppy energy of youth, but as they grew up, their sound calmed down and became more interesting. By the time of their third album, 2020's Mazunte 2016, the group had become a stellar example of how to play modern garage rock with fiery passion and skillful reserve at once. Led by vocalist/guitarist Alejandro Archundia, the band began playing music in 2007, but they didn't release any records until the six-song Oye EP surfaced in 2011. It featured a rough-and-ready garage rock sound bathed in reverb and was followed quickly by another single in 2012 titled "Ah Oh." The group's raucous live shows earned them a dedicated following among garage rock fans and people who wanted a soundtrack to cutting loose. Their next two singles showed some new influences creeping into their sound -- surf on the reverb-heavy "Yumbinha" and punk on "Meta y Dinero." By the time of their 2015 album Chavos Bien, Los Blenders had their sloppily energetic garage rock sound locked down and people noticed. Audiences grew at their shows, they did a live session for Seattle's influential KEXP in late 2016, were featured in a Corona ad with will.i.am, and in early 2017 appeared at Coachella. The band understandably matured over this time, becoming more confident musically, and their second album, 2017's Ha Sido, reflected a newfound level of professionalism to go along with the rambunctious garage punk energy and attitude. Los Blenders continued touring, and when they went in to record their third album, the lineup included bassist Osmar Espinosa, drummer José Manuel Martínez, and guitarist Patricio González, along with Archundia. They stretched musically, adding elements of post-punk and psychedelic to their ever-maturing sound. The album was finished in March 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic really began to hit. The group decided to hold off on releasing it, and while they were waiting the Devil in the Woods label picked it up. Mazunte 2016 is the band's most musically advanced and poppy record yet, putting all the pieces of their sound together seamlessly. It was issued in September 2020.
