Empire State Bastard

Empire State Bastard play a brutal mix of metal, screamo, and experimental rock, a world away from the more radio-friendly work of their day bands Biffy Clyro and Oceansize. Following a handful of live shows and singles in early 2023, the group issued their debut album, Rivers of Heresy, later that year. Originally conceived by Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil and Oceansize's Mike Vennart during Biffy tours, the duo wanted to create a band that would play the most extreme grindcore possible. With the name Empire State Bastard in place before they'd written a note, the duo suddenly found themselves with time on their hands during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vennart started writing the music, supplying Neil with songs that featured brutal riffs and a deep sense of angst and anger. Neil took the material and added lyrics challenging the state of British politics and society itself with guttural screams and growling vocals. With most of the material written, the duo needed a drummer that could fill out the brutal nature of the music they'd created, with the obvious choice being Slayer's Dave Lombardo. With Lombardo on board, they recruited Bitch Falcon's Naomi Macleod on bass and set about recording their debut album proper. In early 2023 the band announced a string of intimate U.K. dates that sold out instantly before the group had issued any music. In March, just a few days before their first live dates, the single "Harvest" appeared, finally giving fans a taste of what was to come. Three more singles followed -- "Stutter," "The Looming," and "Moi?" -- before the group issued their debut album, Rivers of Heresy in September. The four-piece headed out on a full U.K. and European tour in support of the album.
