Angels
Best known for the hit single My Boyfriend's Back, tough-sounding girl band The Angels actually started out life as doo-wop band The Starlets before a name change and two top 40 hits brought them to the attention of songwriters Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer. The songwriters had written My Boyfriend's Back with a view to pitching it to The Shirelles and asked The Angels to record a demo version. The recording sounded so good the music publishers wisely decided to go with the demo and released it as it stood. The song went to number one in the Billboard Charts with the album of the same name reaching number 33. More single releases followed, all penned by Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer but none achieved the chart success of My Boyfriend's Back, the most successful of them being the follow up single I Adore Him which went to number 25. This lack of success led to the group breaking away from their record company Smash and signing to Congress Records in 1964. A subsequent dispute over the ownership of the band's name forced the group to relaunch themselves as The Halos. Lead singer Peggy Santiaglo left the band in 1965 and the band continued to soldier on with limited commercial success. Shortly after an appearance on The Dean Martin Show in 1968 the band split up.
