The Taiwanese boy band 5566 formed in January 2002 around the shared talents of Tony Sun, Jason Hsu, Sam Wang, Zax Wang, and Rio Peng. Each band member had experienced a degree of regional success before 5566's launch. Sun, the group's leader, released several albums of his own during the 1990s before enlisting in the military to fulfill his mandatory service, which effectively halted his solo career. Meanwhile, Sam Wang played soccer on a national level, Jason Hsu worked as a model and commercial actor, and Zax Wang performed with the short-lived boy band POSTM3N. Joined by a fifth singers, Rio Peng, the members of 5566 starred in the teen drama My MVP Valentine, which aired on Taiwanese TV throughout 2002 and helped propel the group to fame. 5566 contributed four songs to My MVP Valentine's popular soundtrack and released a full-length album, 一光年, during the final month of the year. The album sold 240,000 copies in Taiwan. After starring in another TV drama, Westside Story, and contributed heavily to the show's soundtrack, 5566 slimmed down to a four-piece lineup for 2004's Boyfriend, the group's first release since the departure of founding member Peng. Over the years that followed, 5566's four remaining members maintained a busy schedule of television appearances, studio albums, and international Asian tours, while also making multiple promotional appearances in collaboration with the Beijing Olympics. They disbanded in 2008, with Zax Wang becoming the leader of the dance group Merry Monarc and Sun rebranding himself as the manager of the groups 7 km and Wonder 4. 5566's four-piece lineup reunited in 2014 to perform a medley of songs at a Mayday concert and continued reuniting sporadically throughout the rest of the decade, even selling out a pair of venues in Taipei and Singapore during 2019.
