Bill Frisell, der sich stets an Strukturen hält und rastlos nach neuen Kontexten sucht, hat sich selbst übertroffen. Mit zwei klassischen Ensembles, dem 60-köpfigen Brussels Philharmonic und dem 11-köpfigen Umbria Jazz Orchestra, haben Frisell und der berühmte Komponist/Arrangeur und langjährige Mentor und Freund des Gitarristen Michael Gibbs, jeweils ein komplettes Set auf die Beine gestellt. Gibbs, der in den frühen 1970er-Jahren begann, Filmmusik zu komponieren und gleichzeitig Jazzensembles zu leiten, ist für dieses wunderbar aufgenommene Projekt ein gleichberechtigter Partner. Das Brüsseler Philharmoniker-Set beginnt mit dem kurzen und unruhigen Nocturne Vulgaire, in dem sich Streicher und Blechbläser energisch zeigen, ehe sie für den Einsatz von Frisell und seinem Schlagzeuger Rudy Royston sowie den Bassisten Thomas Morgan Platz machen.
Sie zupfen ein paar Töne, bevor sie abrupt in etwas Vertrautes übergehen: eine Version von Billy Strayhorns Lush Life. Frisell arbeitet sich langsam durch Strayhorns Jazz-Standard, wechselt zwischen Noten und Akkorden und wird dabei vom üppigen Schwarm an Streichern unterstützt. Gibbs' Sweet Rain tendiert in Richtung fröhliches Easy-Listening und wird von Frisell und den Streichern begleitet. Im Abschlussstück spielen die Brüsseler Stephen Fosters göttliches Beautiful Dreamer, wobei Frisell - der schon immer eine Schwäche für großartige Harmonien hatte - die Melodie auswählt, während die Band einen opulenten Hintergrundklang schafft. Das Set, das von einer kleineren Formation des Umbria Orchestras gespielt wird, die seit längerem im Jazz Zuhause ist, bringt weniger klassische Elemente ein. Ron Carters Doom, der einzige Song, der von beiden Gruppen gespielt wird, ist dank der Brüsseler Philharmoniker auf eine cineastische Weise mitreißend, während sich das Umbrian Orchestra auf den wiegenden Rhythmus der Melodie beschränkt, zu dem Frisell sein Solo darbietet. Albumbeschreibung
Bill Frisell, der sich stets an Strukturen hält und rastlos nach neuen Kontexten sucht, hat sich selbst übertroffen. Mit zwei klassischen Ensembles, dem 60-köpfigen Brussels Philharmonic und dem 11-köpfigen Umbria Jazz Orchestra, haben Frisell und der berühmte Komponist/Arrangeur und langjährige Mentor und Freund des Gitarristen Michael Gibbs, jeweils ein komplettes Set auf die Beine gestellt. Gibbs, der in den frühen 1970er-Jahren begann, Filmmusik zu komponieren und gleichzeitig Jazzensembles zu leiten, ist für dieses wunderbar aufgenommene Projekt ein gleichberechtigter Partner. Das Brüsseler Philharmoniker-Set beginnt mit dem kurzen und unruhigen Nocturne Vulgaire, in dem sich Streicher und Blechbläser energisch zeigen, ehe sie für den Einsatz von Frisell und seinem Schlagzeuger Rudy Royston sowie den Bassisten Thomas Morgan Platz machen.
Sie zupfen ein paar Töne, bevor sie abrupt in etwas Vertrautes übergehen: eine Version von Billy Strayhorns Lush Life. Frisell arbeitet sich langsam durch Strayhorns Jazz-Standard, wechselt zwischen Noten und Akkorden und wird dabei vom üppigen Schwarm an Streichern unterstützt. Gibbs' Sweet Rain tendiert in Richtung fröhliches Easy-Listening und wird von Frisell und den Streichern begleitet. Im Abschlussstück spielen die Brüsseler Stephen Fosters göttliches Beautiful Dreamer, wobei Frisell - der schon immer eine Schwäche für großartige Harmonien hatte - die Melodie auswählt, während die Band einen opulenten Hintergrundklang schafft. Das Set, das von einer kleineren Formation des Umbria Orchestras gespielt wird, die seit längerem im Jazz Zuhause ist, bringt weniger klassische Elemente ein. Ron Carters Doom, der einzige Song, der von beiden Gruppen gespielt wird, ist dank der Brüsseler Philharmoniker auf eine cineastische Weise mitreißend, während sich das Umbrian Orchestra auf den wiegenden Rhythmus der Melodie beschränkt, zu dem Frisell sein Solo darbietet. Weshalb hier jedes einzelne Set so gut und auf seine eigene Weise funktioniert? Sicherlich, weil Frisell und Gibbs experimentierfreudig und immer auf der Suche nach Neuem sind. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
