Fondé à Londres en 1962 par Francis Rossi et Alan Lancaster, Status Quo a connus plusieurs appellations (The Scorpions, The Spectres, Traffic Jam) avant de trouver son nom définitif en 1967. A partir de là, ils sortent très vite leur premier hit, « Pictures of Matchstick Men », parfaitement inscrit dans la mouvance psychédélique de l’époque. Status Quo traverse ensuite les années 70 en empruntant une voie teintée de Boogie et de Hard Rock, notamment avec les albums « Piledriver » (1972), « Hello! » (1973), « Quo » (1974) et « On the Level » (1975). Les années 80 leur réussissent également, puisqu’ils sortent en 1986 malgré le départ du bassiste Alan Lancaster l’un de leurs plus grands tubes, « In the Army Now », une reprise du duo Sud-africain Bolland & Bolland, présent sur l’album du même nom. Malgré des ventes en baisse au fil des décennies suivantes, le groupe n’a jamais cessé d’être actif, accumulant les tournées et sortant l’album « Backbone » en 2019, plus de cinquante ans après sa naissance. Le 26 septembre 2021, Alan Lancaster qui avait rejoint le groupe à l’occasion d’une tournée de reformation en 2013/2014 décède à l'âge de 72 ans, après un long combat contre la sclérose en plaques.
