Il fut une des plus grandes personnalités musicales de l’après-guerre. Né en Ukraine, Isaac Stern a un an lorsque ses parents émigrent aux Etats-Unis où il apprend le violon. Ce n’est pas un enfant prodige, mais un garçon doué qui travaille lentement et régulièrement. Il raconte dans son autobiographie comment il est vite devenu autodidacte en construisant sa technique lui-même, dans l’admiration de Nathan Milstein et Arthur Grumiaux, ses deux modèles, ce dernier étant pourtant son cadet d’une année. Isaac Stern était doté d’une nature peu commune, d’un appétit d’ogre pour la musique, capable de donner plus de 200 concerts par année dans le monde entier. Son jeu était robuste et corsé, plein de vigueur, avec une articulation incisive et des accents rythmiques très prononcés. Avec le temps il travaillait moins, son intonation et son jeu devenaient précaires, ce qui fit dire à George Szell qu’il gaspillait son temps et son énergie pour des causes dépassant la musique. Il faut dire que Stern était un musicien engagé, considérant la musique comme une force universelle pour la réconciliation entre les peuples. Outre le « grand répertoire » de concertos, il pratiquait la musique de chambre avec son partenaire de toujours, le pianiste d’origine russe Alexander Zakin, avec ses amis Eugen Istomin au piano et Leonard Rose au violoncelle en un trio resté célèbre. Plus, tard, il continue cette même formation avec deux jeunes partenaires : Emmanuel Ax et Yo-Yo Ma. Mais la musique de ses contemporains fascine cet homme jamais rassasié ni blasé. Plusieurs compositeurs écrivent à son intention : Leonard Bernstein, Henri Dutilleux (L’Arbre des songes), Peter Maxwell Davies, Krzysztof Penderecki. Il se fait même acteur, en incarnant son lointain collègue Eugène Ysaÿe pour le cinéma. La discographie d’Isaac Stern, très abondante, a été presque entièrement réalisée pour le label américain CBS (aujourd’hui SONY CLASSICAL) qui a recueilli l’ensemble de son vaste répertoire. Outre ses partenaires déjà cités, on y trouve les noms de Pablo Casals, Eugene Ormandy, Leonard Bernstein, Bruno Walter, Daniel Barenboïm, Sir Thomas Beecham, Zubin Mehta ou Seiji Ozawa. Quelques enregistrements « live » réalisés à Paris ou au Festival de Lucerne permettent de l’écouter en concert et d’être ainsi au plus près de celui qui fut un des violonistes les plus réputés et les plus admirés de son époque.
