Piri

Manchester-based vocalist, dancer, and social media personality piri sings sweet, crush-inspired lyrics set to vibrant garage and drum'n'bass rhythms. Working with producer Tommy Villiers, she scored a viral hit with the 2021 single "soft spot," and continued releasing tunes such as 2022's "words" and the mixtape froge.mp3 that year. Sophie McBurnie (aka piri) and Tommy Villiers started making music together after they began dating. Villiers had been producing drum'n'bass tracks since he was 17, and the two bonded over artists like Disclosure and Kaytranada. They began writing songs reflecting their love of dance music, with lyrics inspired by their relationship. The pair's disco-influenced single "it's a match" was self-released in 2021. Their next track, a liquid drum'n'bass tune called "soft spot," became a hit on TikTok, leading to a major-label deal with EMI. U.K. garage pioneer MJ Cole released a remix of the song, and "beachin," another summery drum'n'bass track, followed in early 2022, with Skream providing a more abstract remix. The duo released the two-step track "words" and atmospheric drum'n'bass song "on & on" before their debut mixtape, froge.mp3, arrived in October, shortly followed by the additional single "unlock it." In early 2023, the pair announced that they had broken up in November, and two further tracks were released: the MJ Cole collaboration "Feel It" and the hyperpop-influenced "updown." Drum'n'bass producer Sudley's single "fumble," featuring piri, appeared in April.
