Dumb

Dumb are a punk rock band from Canada who stubbornly refuse to live up to their name. Playing sharp, angular music that marries noisy guitars and fractured rhythms with strong, if challenging, melodies and lyrics that are full of dark wit and pointed observations, Dumb burst out of the Vancouver independent music community with a prolific run of releases, issuing three EPs and two albums between 2015 and 2016. After earning critical raves for the surf-inspired concept album Beach Church and the melodic but uncompromising Dumb EP 5$ or Free, the band was signed by the respected indie label Mint Records, which issued Seeing Green in 2018. They refined their scrappy, dynamic sound on 2019's Club Nites, and added brass accents on 2022's Pray 4 Tomorrow. Dumb were founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, by guitarist and singer Franco Rossino, guitarist Nick Short, bassist Shelby Vredik, and drummer Pipé Morelli. Dumb were playing regularly in Vancouver not long after they launched in 2015, and a few months later they issued a self-released EP, Friendship. After the release of Friendship, bassist Vredik dropped out of the group to pursue other interests, and Brett Barmby joined the band in time for its second EP of 2015, Tulips. Barmby left Dumb to attend grad school, and Gavin Ray (Franco's brother) took over as bassist for the recording of the nine-song Beach Church, an experiment in surf music influences that was released in February 2016. The group wasted little time going back into the studio, and Mustang Law, an album that found Dumb back in arty punk territory, came out in October 2016. After the album was released, Ray left the group to go back to college ("Grad school kept stealing our bassists," Rossino told journalist Judah Schulte) and Shelby Vredik returned to Vancouver and rejoined Dumb. With the original quartet back in action, Dumb rounded out 2016 with the December release of the six-song Dumb EP 5$ or Free. As Dumb settled back into a familiar lineup, they devoted 2017 to live work, playing often in Vancouver and staging three concert tours. In April 2018, Mint Records, among Canada's most respected independent labels, revealed that Dumb had signed with them, and two months later, the band released their next album. Titled Seeing Green, the album featured some of Dumb's strongest work to date, with the title nodding to the themes of money, envy, and inexperience. June 2019 brought a second Dumb album via Mint, Club Nites, a similarly fierce set that the group described as "a collection of narratives drawn from the nightlife ecosystem." In 2021, Dumb recorded the song "Pizza Slice" for a split single with another Vancouver band, Tough Age, whose track was called "Giuseppe Pizzeria." The vinyl 7" was packaged with an eight-page comic book by artist Cole Pauls. The group's third full-length album, Pray 4 Tomorrow, was issued in November 2022. Along with Dumb's artfully fractured guitar-based rock, several tracks also included trumpet work from Kristy-Lee Audette, whose résumé includes live work with Sloan and Adele.
