Girls in Airports
Danish collective Girls in Airports are known for their genre-bending, globally informed soundscapes, mixing Nordic jazz and folk with indie rock. They first garnered attention with their 2010 self-titled debut and have continued to expand their sound with albums like 2020's Dive, 2021's Leap (with Aarhus Jazz Orchestra), and 2023's How It Is Now.
Formed in 2009 in Copenhagen, Girls in Airports initially featured saxophonist/flutist Martin Stender, saxophonist/clarinetist Lars Greve, keyboardist Mathias Holm, percussionist Victor Dybbroe, and drummer Mads Forsby. They debuted with the eponymous Girls in Airports in 2010 and built a loyal following touring throughout Europe, China, and Brazil. They returned in 2013 with Kaikoura, and have released a handful of well-regarded efforts, including 2011's Migration and 2015's Fables. A concert album, Live, appeared in 2017. It was around this time that Forsby left the band and drummer Anders Vestergaard came on board. Vestergaard made his debut on 2020's Dive, which also proved to be Greve's last album with the group. Pared down to a quartet, Girls in Airports returned in 2021 with Leap, a collaboration with Denmark's Aarhus Jazz Orchestra that also featured contributions from violinist Nils Gröndahl. Returning to their quartet line-up, they delivered How It Is Now in 2023.
