Étrange et séduisant album que ce Yuck portant le nom du groupe londonien qui le livre aujourd’hui, dans un grand geste d’adolescent rebelle, à la face du monde. Car la moyenne d’âge de Max Bloom, Daniel Blumberg, Mariko Doi et Jonny Rogoff avoisine les vingt ans – tout comme leur musique.
Avec des titres comme « Georgia » (qui fit connaître le groupe quelques mois avant la sortie de l’album) ou « Stutter », il aurait été facile de le classer dans les disques revival du shoegaze britannique. Tout comme « Get Away », « Holing Out » ou « Operation » auraient pu le désigner comme un album sous influence grunge américain. Que nenni, Yuck fait le grand écart, avec une souplesse déconcertante, entre les années 80 du Royaume-Uni et les nineties de l’Amérique. Pourquoi choisir entre Jesus & Mary Chain et Dinosaur Jr. lorsqu’il est possible de concocter une potion magique à partir de leurs ingrédients respectifs ?
Il s’agit donc de rock, d’un rock bruyamment électrique, mais qui a l’intelligence de ne pas omettre de saupoudrer des bonnes doses de douceur sur l’exacte moitié de l’album avec des ballades acidulées : « Shook Down », « Suck », « Sunday » ou « Suicide Policeman ». Yuck s’octroie également une pause instrumentale avec le joli « Roses Gives a Lilly » avant de terminer sur sept minutes fracassées et sous réverbe poisseuse : « Rubber » – suffisamment efficace pour donner envie à Mogwai de s’y attaquer sous son habit de remixeur.
Parmi leurs camarades nostalgiques d’une époque qu’ils ont à peine effleurée tels que No Age, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart ou encore Deerhunter, Yuck se détache par sa faculté à préserver la même atmosphère d’adolescence désespérée mais capable de tout – celle-là même qu’on retrouve dans les films de Larry Clark ou de Gus Van Sant.
