Yes est l’album des découvertes : le public ne connaît pas le groupe et n’a de toutes façons pas la moindre idée de la musique qui va lui être proposée. Quant à la bande d’Anderson (chanteur, personnage charismatique, et leader), elle navigue à vue, parmi les technologies de studio qu’elle maîtrise peu, une empathie à roder entre ses différents membres, et le désir de créer un nouveau langage musical.

On peut ajouter à ces handicaps de départ une totale inexpérience du producteur Paul Clay (ce qui aura pour conséquence un mixage étonnement naïf, privilégiant jusqu’à l’absurde batterie et guitare), ainsi qu’une faiblesse patente du répertoire, contraignant Yes à reprendre une chanson des Byrds (« I See You ») et à enregistrer la version la plus complexe jamais donnée d’un titre des Beatles. « Every Little Thing » sonne comme une pyrotechnie où se mêlent divers mouvements, divers tempi, et diverses juxtapositions d’arrangements, plus sophistiqués les uns que les autres, avec la désagréable sensation que tous les musiciens jouent très vite, et très fort, chacun sa partition dans son coin.

Mais le mérite de Yes reste toutefois de nager à contre-courant de la mode psychédélique de l’époque, déroulant une musique structurée, parfois proche du hard rock mais toujours mélodique. Malgré sa modeste carrière dans les classements de ventes britanniques, l’album est à considérer comme une carte de visite qui permit au groupe de signaler son existence. Comme l’ensemble des premiers albums, il a bénéficié d’une édition remastérisée en 1997.
