C’est le principal opus du groupe, un hard rock riche, expressif et sonore qui résumait les six premières années du groupe. "Won't Get Fooled Again" est devenu une chanson culte à la radio et "Behind Blue Eyes" est devenue contre toute attente l’un des morceaux les plus appréciés de Pete Townshend. Roger Daltrey n’a jamais été aussi bon au chant et la basse de John Entwistle redouble de présence, tandis que Keith Moon livre une performance explosive à la batterie.
