Après les intimistes Telling Stories et Let It Rain, Where You Live marque le retour de Tracy Chapman vers des compositions plus contrastées, un style rock plus rythmé et des thèmes plus politiques et sociaux.
Si « Talk To You » et « Love’s Proof » sont dans la lignée des chansons romantiques qui ont fait le succès de Tracy Chapman, « Don’t dwell » allie instrumentation dépouillée, voix écorchée sur une mélodie déchirante puissamment évocatrice. « Change », « Before Easter », et surtout le single « America » (écrite en 2000, après l’élection controversée de George Bush) retrouvent le style rock dès débuts, basé sur une rythmique très appuyée et sur cette voix nerveuse caractéristique, pour traiter de la relation entre l’individu et la société, ou se faire critique de l’impérialisme occidental.
A la différence que Tracy Chapman est maintenant une artiste plus aboutie et à part entière : l’instrumentation est plus complexe, laisse place à des solos instrumentaux ainsi que des sonorités plus variées (acoustiques et électriques), elle-même étant une musicienne très polyvalente (textes, composition, chant, guitares, mais aussi claviers, clarinette, harmonica ou percussions).
Tracy Chapman, artiste engagée ? De part son caractère sombre, discret et introspectif, il conviendrait finalement plus de la considérer comme une personnalité attentive au monde, une observatrice clairvoyante et concernée.
