Based in Worcester, MA, the Hostage Heart belie their rather poetic-sounding name with the devastating bile and fury emanating from this six-song EP, the curiously titled (and oddly punctuated) Where There Is Despair, Hope;. Stranger still, decapitating collisions of death metal and hardcore such as "Pressing My Lips to the Cup of Wrath and Death," "Armageddon Outta Here," and "The First Signs of World Cancer," as violent as they sound, contain lyrics as resolutely poignant as they are scathingly accusatory. All of this is part and parcel of the bandmembers' singular mission: delivering positive messages drawn from their straight-edge lifestyle and core Christian values, no matter how ugly the sounds that accompany them may be. Of course, "ugly" is in the eye of the beholder, and most extreme metal fans will likely find the counterpoint riffs of "Dead Front Tooth" and the harmonious midsection of "Destroy, Rebuild, Destroy" to be perfectly beautiful music.
