Welcome to the Dollhouse est un produit dans tous les sens du terme. Réalisé de manière quasi chirurgicale devant des caméras de télévision, sous la haute supervision de Puff Daddy, son but est de plaire et de vendre.
Ce principe de départ ôte toute surprise, tout danger à l'album. Les jeunes femmes sont jolies et chantent bien, les mélodies sont agréables, la production saupoudre de-ci de-là des gimmicks sonores qui donnent une impression de recherche. Welcome to the Dollhouse ne peut qu'atteindre un but simple, vendre un maximum d'exemplaires en un minimum de temps.
Hormis le fait que le but est parfaitement atteint, au moins aux Etats-Unis, il est troublant de reconnaitre que Welcome to the Dollhouse vaut bien, voire parfois mieux, que certains albums d'artistes mieux considérés.
Hormis le simple « Damaged » qui se démarque légèrement, l'ensemble est parfaitement compact, sans temps morts. Puff Daddy réussi avec Welcome to the Dollhouse un excercice de style qui rappelle que depuis Phil Spector, les groupes féminins sont le fait de grands producteurs.
Danity Kane n'est pas avare pour offrir du plaisir simple, c'est nettement mieux que de la frustration.
