Oubliée la brouille avec Keith Richards, oublié le fiasco de Primitive Cool , oublié aussi le rêve d'être une star hors de The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger se souvient alors de l'essentiel, il est un formidable chanteur de rock blues, si ce n'est le meilleur.
Wandering Spirit à cet énorme mérite, rendre à Mick Jagger ce qui lui appartient, ce talent de faire résooner chaque mot, de s'approprier chaque syllabe et d'en faire une modulation de Mick Jagger. D'entrée avec « Wired All Night » , la consigne est claire, ce soir il n'y a pas de prisonniers. D'autant que sur « Sweet Thing » Mick Jagger fait du Mick Jagger, sensuel, presque féminin par moments, et là il est imbattable.
Si les invités de l'album sont moins prestigieux, Lenny Kravitz n'est ni Jeff Beck, ni Pete Townshend, ni Nile Rodgers, ils sont aussi moins envahissants. Tout le monde joue groupé, Wandering Spirit est presque un album de groupe. La conclusion avec un titre du répertoire traditionnel irlandais « Handsome Molly », est à la fois touchante et représentative du talent vocal unique de Mick Jagger. Il s'amuse, comme naguère en copiant les bluesmen, à jouer avec les intonations, comédien vocal né, imitateur de génie, Mick Jagger tel qu'en lui-même, retors et sincère à la fois.
