Few would dispute Jerry Goldsmith's consummate mastery of the action movie score, but throughout the first half of the 1990s, it seemed he coasted on past glories, recycling ideas and approaches from previous efforts to diminishing returns. U.S. Marshals is one in a series of late-career Goldsmith efforts reclaiming the spirit of his finest scores, employing both orchestral and electronic elements to create the kind of palpable suspense and menace that can make or break the onscreen narrative. And as usual, Goldsmith is just as effective with nuance as he is with bombast, lacing even his most subtle melodies with dark portent. The six-minute climax "Swamp Search" is a veritable master class in the art of adventure scoring.
