Avec son deuxième album Us and Them, Shinedown tente de rééditer l'exploit du précédent, Leave a Whisper (2003), récompensé par un disque de platine.
Le quatuor de Jacksonville (Floride) sert un hard rock mélodique porté par la voix haute et ténue de Brent Smith et garni de soli de guitare sans grande originalité. Tout cela sonne comme du déjà entendu et les trois singles « Heroes », « Save Me » et « I Dare You », qui se succèdent, ne sauvent guère l'album de la redite. C'est d'autant plus dommage que l'ensemble est maîtrisé par une section rythmique implacable.
Us and Them, un (tout petit) cran au-dessus des albums précédent et suivant, s'est vu réédité en édition de luxe en juillet 2009, comportant des versions maquettes, en public, acoustiques et des mixes différents, portant le nombre de titres à 25. Il n'a pas gagné pour autant en qualité intrinsèque.
