La tonalité des disques de R.E.M. a toujours reflété de manière exacte l’état d’esprit du groupe au moment de l’enregistrement. Jamais pourtant cette empathie de l’oeuvre envers ses créateurs n’est apparue aussi clairement que sur Up. Cet album, en effet, est marqué de bout en bout par le choc qu’a représenté le départ du batteur Bill Berry.
Au-delà du son, fatalement modifié, ce qui frappe avant tout dans Up est son caractère convalescent, comme anesthésié. Du choix des sonorités (le vibraphone, très présent) aux tempos (globalement lents et engourdis), des textes (le thème du sommeil revient régulièrement) aux mélodies (étrangement atrophiées, comme sur le single « Daysleeper », qui ne décolle jamais vraiment), le disque tout entier baigne dans une sorte de torpeur médicamenteuse.
R.E.M. accuse visiblement le coup de la perte d’un de ses membres ; pourtant, lorsqu’il retrouve ses esprits, il se montre encore capable de bouleverser (« At My Most Beautiful » - tout est dit dans le titre – ou « Parakeet », ballade à fendre l’âme). C’est finalement là ce qui le rend touchant : même blessé, un genou à terre, R.E.M. reste ce groupe humain, trop humain, qui refuse obstinément de mourir.
