Successeur de Bing Crosby dans le coeur des américains, Perry Como symbolise la douceur de l'après Seconde Guerre Mondiale, sur fond de croissance économique soutenue. Perry Como profite à plein de l'essor de la radio et plus encore de la télévision, où ses shows réunissent toute la famille devant la petite lucarne.
Baryton à la voix langoureuse, Perry Como reste musicalement ancré dans les années trente et quarante, avec des mélodies tout droit venues de Broadway et du Brill Building. La plupart des vingt-et-un titres regroupés sur The Very Best of Perry Como ont été des top cinq du Billboard et sont devenus des classiques.
Qui ne connaît pas « Till the End of Time », « Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes », « Wanted », « Magic Moments », « If », « Some Enchanted Evening », et autres « Prisoner of Love » ? Ces titres passés depuis longtemps à la postérité s'écoutent forcément avec une certaine nostalgie, bien qu'il leur manque la gouaille de l'interprétation d'un Dean Martin ou d'un Frank Sinatra, sortis du même moule mais bien moins sages.
D'ailleurs la réputation de Perry Como est beaucoup plus circonscrite au monde anglo-saxon que celle des membres du Rat Pack. Trop familial dans sa vie et par son public, Perry Como se voit rejeté par l'arrivée du rock 'n' roll, loin de s'en offusquer il courbe l'échine et attend des jours meilleurs. Qui viendront dans les années soixante-dix quand il deviendra animateur de shows de variétés très suivis au moment des fêtes de fin d'année. Familial on vous dit.
