Le premier album de Joss Stone, remarquable, entraîne l'auditeur dans l'âge d'or du RnB au début des années 70 avec ses irrésistibles batterie grasse, orgue envoûtant et guitare funk. Naturellement, sa voix pleine de jeunesse comporte des éléments de ses influences soul et lorsqu'elle est ingénieusement combinée avec des morceaux tels que "Fell in Love with a Girl" des White Stripes, l'effet est extraordinaire. La production rudimentaire classique de la star de la soul Betty Wright, et l'occasion d'écouter des artistes aussi mythiques que Timmy Thomas, Latimore, et Willie "Little Beaver" Hale jouer sur le même disque constituent un véritable trésor. L'album The Soul Sessions, accompagné par des musiciens exceptionnels, est un premier album intrigant, qui révèle une héritière potentielle de la blue-eyed-soul à la Dusty Springfield.
