Memphis rapper Big Scarr's 2022 death occurred right as his star was rising. Just 22 years old when he died, he had already broken into the upper reaches of the Billboard charts with his 2021 mixtape Big Grim Reaper, had signed onto Gucci Mane's Atlantic subsidiary label 1017 Records, and was included in XXL Magazine's coveted Freshman Class of 2022 as one of the most promising rappers of his era. The posthumous album The Secret Weapon is a testament to Scarr's powers as a rapper and a bittersweet reminder of how much potential he had when his life ended far too early. His verbal arsenal on The Secret Weapon is made up of simple but unrelenting techniques. His flow on "First Time in Vegas" is so liquid and constant it's not clear how he manages to take a breath between bar after bar of complex rhymes. The same is true for the booming "Try Being Me," a tune whose relaxed beat is challenged by Scarr's dizzying rapping. Key Glock appears on the bustling menace of "Toe Tag," and Pooh Shiesty contributes to album standout "Angel Dust," a cloudy trap burner with a violin hook that does a lot of damage in just 78 seconds. While already a mainstream success, Big Scarr was still miles away from pop at the time of his death. The triumphant horn loops, twinkly keys, and hint of melody in "Not in My League" are as close as the rapper gets to something radio-ready, but he quickly disregards the song's production nuance and opts to just steamroll through the beat with his standard unstoppable multisyllabic flow.
