The Ritual est certainement l'album de Testament qui représente le mieux le groupe, en équilibre au-dessus du vide. Testament est resté en position instable, là où leurs confrères comme Metallica remplissent désormais les stades.
Ce n'est pas faute d'avoir réalisé de bons albums, dont The Ritual, certainement celle de n'avoir pas choisi le death metal plutôt que le trash metal. La mystique du groupe est plus près du death metal, alors que sa musique est restée ancrée dans le trash, voire dans le speed metal pour certains passages.
Peut-être que Chuck Billy a le tort de trop bien chanter, où d'autres se contentent de rauques grognements, certainement qu'Alex Skolnick est un trop fin guitariste, il est évident que des titres épiques et majestueux que sont « Return to Serenity », « The Ritual », « As the Seasons Grey » ont tout de classiques honteusement méconnus.
Après The Ritual, Testament est au bord de l'implosion, tant donner et recevoir si peu, la malédiction est cruelle.
