Un pour sept, sept pour un. Quatrième album des nutty boys, The Rise and Fall est le dernier album de la période faste du groupe de Camden Town. Déjà, les premières tentations pop surviennent au coin d'un morceau comme « Tomorrow's just another day », alors que les sonorités ska manquent cruellement à l'appel. Ultime opus madnessien avant le premier split qui verra le départ de Mike Barson, le titre même de l'album annonçait peut-être le destin du groupe, qui allait céder aux sirènes de la facilité et de variété là où les fans attendaient au contraire la rigueur d'un ska sans concessions.
Incarnant presque le début de la fin (du moins, jusqu'en 1992, et le succès de Madstock), The Rise and Fall est révélateur d'un certain conformisme ambiant, propre à une grande partie de la production anglaise de la deuxième moitié des années 80. Dieu merci, les années 90, annonciatrices d'une nouvelle tonicité du groupe et du genre pointaient déjà à l'horizon.
