Jouant sur plusieurs tableaux, Gym Class Heroes est un groupe qui synthétise toutes les couleurs musicales du temps, d’où son impact pop incomparable.
L’album voit sa production partagée entre Chris « Tricky » Stewart, qui a signé des hits pour Britney Spears, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Rihanna (« Umbrella », c’est lui !) et quelques autres. Il apporte la touche urbaine. Cool & Dre, duo de producteurs de Floride, apportent la touche plus hip hop (ils ont signés des titres pour Nas, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, The Game, Busta Rhymes etc). Enfin Patrick Stump s’occupe des morceaux plus rock.
La liste des featurings inclus en outre Estelle et Daryl Hall (de Hall & Oates, fameux duo de soul blanche des années 70/80). Autant dire que The Quilt est un disque varié, qui passe avec fluidité d’un univers à l’autre, en gardant toujours cette touche personnelle de rap et de sonorités rock, mais sans la « dureté » inhérente aux habituelles productions rap / rock, façon Kid Rock ou Linkin’ Park.
Là, on est dans la pop urbaine efficace, avec refrains légers et riffs guillerets. Un exemple rare de groupe mixte (deux Blancs, deux Noirs, du rock, du rap) dont le son, sans renier ses racines punk et hip hop, pratique une pop fondamentalement 2008.
