Depuis ses débuts en tant que bassiste au sein des Five Elements du saxophoniste Steve Coleman (cf. Drop Kick paru en 1992) puis dès l’année suivante en tant que chanteuse et songwriter avec la sortie de son premier disque en leader Plantation Lullabies avec Joshua Redman, Geri Allen ou David Fiuczynski en guests, Meshell Ndegeocello n’a jamais fait mystère de son attrait pour le jazz dans ses formes les plus modernistes. Tout en continuant de nourrir sa propre musique de références plus ou moins explicites à cette tradition en multipliant les invitations prestigieuses (Gene Lake, Kenny Garrett, Wallace Roney, Brandon Ross…), la musicienne a ces dernières années commencé à flirter avec Blue Note en apparaissant sur différents disques de Robert Glasper (Black Radio), Jason Moran ou Marcus Strickland (Nihil Novi). C’est donc presque naturellement qu’elle célébre aujoud'hui, avec son treizième album The Omnichord Real Book, ses grands débuts sur le mythique label de jazz, décidément en plein renouveau.
Car rien ne différencie fondamentalement sa musique de ce qu’elle a pu produire par le passé. Dans ce vaste et subtil kaléidoscope d’influences mettant en scène une impressionnante armada d’invités, qu’ils soient instrumentistes (le trompettiste Ambrose Akinmusire, le guitariste Jeff Parker, la harpiste Brandee Younger, le vibraphoniste Joel Ross, le batteur Mark Guiliana…) ou vocalistes (Hanna Benn, Joan As Police Woman, Jade Hicks, la Sud-Africaine Thandiswa Mazwai…), Meshell Ndegeocello met son art du songwriting finement déconstructiviste au service d’une musique syncrétique, flamboyante et joyeuse, irrésistible de grooves enchâssés et proprement fascinante dans sa façon d’intégrer dans la trame complexe de textures sonores hybrides des fulgurances instrumentales toujours au service du discours global. Drop Kick paru en 1992) puis dès l’année suivante en tant que chanteuse et songwriter avec la sortie de son premier disque en leader Plantation Lullabies avec Joshua Redman, Geri Allen ou David Fiuczynski en guests, Meshell Ndegeocello n’a jamais fait mystère de son attrait pour le jazz dans ses formes les plus modernistes. Tout en continuant de nourrir sa propre musique de références plus ou moins explicites à cette tradition en multipliant les invitations prestigieuses (Gene Lake, Kenny Garrett, Wallace Roney, Brandon Ross…), la musicienne a ces dernières années commencé à flirter avec Blue Note en apparaissant sur différents disques de Robert Glasper (Black Radio), Jason Moran ou Marcus Strickland (Nihil Novi). C’est donc presque naturellement qu’elle célébre aujoud'hui, avec son treizième album The Omnichord Real Book, ses grands débuts sur le mythique label de jazz, décidément en plein renouveau.
Car rien ne différencie fondamentalement sa musique de ce qu’elle a pu produire par le passé. Dans ce vaste et subtil kaléidoscope d’influences mettant en scène une impressionnante armada d’invités, qu’ils soient instrumentistes (le trompettiste Ambrose Akinmusire, le guitariste Jeff Parker, la harpiste Brandee Younger, le vibraphoniste Joel Ross, le batteur Mark Guiliana…) ou vocalistes (Hanna Benn, Joan As Police Woman, Jade Hicks, la Sud-Africaine Thandiswa Mazwai…), Meshell Ndegeocello met son art du songwriting finement déconstructiviste au service d’une musique syncrétique, flamboyante et joyeuse, irrésistible de grooves enchâssés et proprement fascinante dans sa façon d’intégrer dans la trame complexe de textures sonores hybrides des fulgurances instrumentales toujours au service du discours global.
