En 2014, la chanteuse et multi-instrumentiste canadienne Loreena McKennitt faisait le bilan de 30 années d’une carrière dédiée d’abord à son interprétation des musiques celtes à laquelle s’est ajoutée au fur et à mesure l’inspiration venue de ses recherches et voyages au cœur de cultures européennes, africaines ou asiatiques, dans un double album constitué d’un best of, The Journey so Far et de A Midsummer Night’s Tour un live enregistré en Allemagne en juillet 2012 . Sur le premier, on retrouve ses tubes Bonny Portmore, apparu en 1993 sur la BO de Highlander 3, ou The Mummers’ Dance, tiré de son album The Book of Secrets enregistré au studio de Peter Gabriel en 1997 comme Marco Polo et Dante’s Prayer.
Elle remonte aussi jusqu’au début de sa carrière avec un extrait de son premier album Elemental de 1985, Stolen Child, une composition basée sur un poème de W.B. Yeats, dont elle adapte les vers de Down by the Sally Gardens sur son disque alors le plus récent, The Wind That Shake the Barleys. Elle offre aussi trois extraits de son classique The Visit (1991) Bonny Portmore déjà cité, The Old Ways et son adaptation musicale du célèbre poème romantique de Tennyson The Lady of Shalott. La décennie 90 est sans doute celle où son talent est au zénith, ce que confirment deux extraits de The Mask and Mirror (1994) : The Mystic’s Dream et The Bonny Swans. Son chant lumineux, son jeu précis au piano ou à la harpe, son univers romantique et ancré dans des civilisations anciennes, sont servis avec justesse et élégance par les violons, violoncelle, guitares, bouzouki, oud, flûtes, clarinette basse et batterie de ses musiciens remarquables. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
