Bien intégrés dans le monde du metal mainstream et du hard rock pour teenagers au point d’en adopter la panoplie, les quatre du Massachusetts reviennent en 2008 avec ce The Illusion Of Progress composé et enregistré dans la droite ligne du prédécesseur Chapter V.
Évidemment, le déferlement sonore reste intact : c’est énervé, c’est violent, ça résonne dans tous les sens... Mais, car il y a un mais, il manque tout de même un petit quelque chose. La petite touche particulière qui avait autrefois fait le succès de Dysfunction ou Chapter V. Clairement conçu pour viser le public des kids américains, The Illusion of Progress s’avère quelque peu trop formaté pour être tout à fait honnête et les quelques étirements jazzy dont se pare l’album sur « The Corner » sont clairement dispensables, surtout lorsqu’on compare ce morceau avec d’autres titres plus fidèles au genre comme « Tangled Up in You » ou « Schizophrenic Conversation », enregistré unplugged.
Bien que l’album ne soit pas spécialement décevant, il laisse peut-être augurer de l’évolution d’un groupe décidé à rentrer dans le rang, et, si tel est le cas, ce serait franchement dommage.
