Un an après la parution de son premier album The Fame, Lady Gaga remet le couvert avec The Fame Monster, agrémenté d'une nouvelle pochette, curieusement plus sobre et classieuse que la précédente, mais surtout de huit nouveaux titres, ce qui semble l'unique accroche de cette mouture.
The Fame Monster sert donc de séance de rattrapage pour les distraits qui seraient passés à côté des classiques « Poker Face », « Just Dance » ou « Lovegame ». L'autre hit, « Paparazzi », est proposé dans une version acoustique enregistrée à Paris. Parmi les nouveaux titres, il ne faut pas espérer dénicher la perle rare. Certes, « Alejandro », « Monster » ou « Speechless » laissent entrevoir de nouveaux horizons à la star warholienne, mais seul « Bad Romance », auto-célébration en duo avec Beyoncé, semble taillé pour le sommet des charts.
Plutôt de d'offrir un angle différent ou une nouvelle image de Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster - qui vaut par ailleurs pour les photos de son livret - est un pas de côté destiné à entretenir le suspense et relancer sa publicité.
