Le nouvel album de Kevin Gates, The Ceremony, a des ambitions gigantesques. A 38 ans, le natif de Bâton Rouge, en Louisiane, ne faiblit en rien dans sa volonté d’envoyer des projets toujours plus imposants. Cette fois, il s’équipe d’un sens de la mélodie qu’on lui connaissait, certes, mais qu’il ne mobilisait qu’avec parcimonie. Il suffit d’écouter les titres Lil Yea, Letter 2 My Fans qui, comme son titre l’indique, s’adresse à ses fidèles avec émotion. Car derrière la carrosserie blindée, Kevin Gates laisse filtrer des sentiments complexes, ses doutes et ses souvenirs assaillants. On y trouve la violence, notamment dans les morceaux plus inspirés des sonorités d’Atlanta tels que Healing. Mais c’est bien le Sud qui domine ici. RUMORS, par exemple, l’un des climax de cette cérémonie un brin hardcore, semble taillé pour partir à la guerre, mais sans se limiter à l’étalage de muscles.
