The B-52’s (le jaune) est sans nul doute le meilleur album des bombardiers de Georgie. Ce disque est un vrai pot-pourri de styles : garage, pop, punk, New wave ou encore White funk ! Vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires et ce, dès la première année, cet album est resté dans les annales du Rock. La plus morne des soirées pourrait être égayée par cet opus. The B-52’s défie les critiques tant sa composition est originale…
Le ton est donné dès le single Planet Claire, une vraie bombe psychédélique. Ses claviers proviennent tout droit du manoir de la famille Addams. Un son déjanté pour l’époque quand on sait qu’en 1978, l’heure est aux Sex Pistols. La voix de Fred Schneider laisse un froid mortuaire sur cette mélodie déjantée. « 52 Girls » passe à un tout autre style avec un côté surf music délicieux grâce aux voix pop et sucrées de Cindy Wilson et de Kate Pierson. Un mélange des Beach Boys et de punk… improbable et pourtant les B-52’s produisent ce son avec une aisance incroyable. Et les tubes continuent de s’enchaîner tranquillement… « Dance This Mess Around », « Lava », « 6060-842 »… tout est simplement parfait.
Que dire des lyrics trempés de LSD aussi délirantes que leurs paroliers « Do the Aqua-Velva, Do the Dirty Dog, Do the Escalator »… Quand au single « Rock Lobster » qui conte l’histoire d’un homard épris d’un scarabée prénommé… Beatles ! (Il paraîtrait que John Lennon voulut se mettre à la musique après avoir écouté ce titre !) « Rock Lobster », aussi farfelu soit-il est « le » single du combo, ses riffs accrocheurs, cette batterie surexcitée et ces claviers à la mélodie funéraire en font un des premières perles d’un collier New wave aux couleurs arc-en-ciel !
The B-52’s est un concentré de bonne humeur mais également un chef d’œuvre d’un point de vue musical.
