Ça n’est pas une première mais avec That Would Be Me, Harry Connick Jr. range son costard de crooner et de chanteur de jazz au placard pour se faire pop star. En plus d’un quart de siècle de carrière, le natif de New Orleans s’est déjà aventuré dans ce genre de territoire et son activité récente de juré dans l’émission American Idol (version américaine de La Nouvelle Star) lui a sans doute donné des envies de changements. Mais ce qu’il propose avant tout ici, c’est un florilège de ses compétences. On alterne entre pop pure, soul un brin vintage, ballades de lover et chansons jazzy. Sa voix unique permet évidemment de ne pas être perdu dans ce joli patchwork sur lequel brillent aussi, ça-et-là, ses compétences pianistiques. Avec That Would Be Me, Harry Connick Jr. montre surtout qu’il vient de New Orleans, là où les frontières musicales sont inexistantes, là où passer du jazz au funk, de la pop à la soul, et du blues à la country, ne pose aucun problème. © CM/Qobuz
