Limpide allusion aux Contes de Canterbury de Chaucer (Sumner étant le vrai nom de Sting), ce quatrième album studio en nom propre célèbre essentiellement le retour du chanteur à une acception plus immédiate, plus pop pour tout dire, de son art. Produit par le fidèle Hugh Pagdham, le disque est pour Sting l’occasion de rompre avec sa tradition de brigade de stars (si l’on excepte la présence du saxophone charnu de David Sanborn, et d’Eric Clapton dans « It’s Probably Me »). De même, le retour aux fondamentaux pop de l’ère Police offre ici une simple collection de chansons, et plus un album conceptuel aux ressorts dramatiques parfois fumeux (tel le prédécesseur The Soul Cages). L’humour que l’on peut même relever ici ou là (tout arrive…) en fait indubitablement le meilleur album de Sting. Ten Summoner’s Tales atteindra la deuxième position des classements américains, et se verra honoré de deux Grammy Awards : celui de la meilleure chanson pop de l’année pour « If I Ever… », et celui de la meilleure production pour Pagdham. Deux hits majeurs accompagnent l’album : « Fields of Gold » (23ème aux États-Unis et 16ème en Grande-Bretagne), et « If I Ever Lose My Faith In You » donc (17ème en Amérique, 14ème à Londres).
