Catalogué à ses tout débuts comme un Justin Bieber bis, Cody Simpson opère déjà un premier virage avec Surfers Paradise. En cause certainement le peu de succès de Paradise mais aussi le souhait de se rapprocher d'une expression qui lui soit plus proche. On reste certes dans une pop teenage - logique pour un artiste âgé de seize ans - mais avec une inflexion vers un côté rétro de la chose. C'est en somme le mariage de David Cassidy et de la surf music que Cody Simpson se propose de célébrer.
Le natif de Gold Coast, dans le Queensland, a toujours connu la culture du surf, sport qu'il a pratiqué avec assiduité. Le surf c'est aussi un mode de vie fait de jolies filles, de fêtes et de l'hédonisme naturel des corps bronzés toute l'année. Cody Simpson est comme un poisson dans l'eau dans un répertoire frivole et pétillant. qu'il sifflote sa joie de vivre sur « Summertime of Our Lives », demande l'aide de Ziggy Marley sur « Love » ou qu'il entonne la ronde amoureuse adolescente de « Pretty Brown Eyes », il rayonne de bonheur.
Seule fausse note relative, le R&B fadasse de « Imma Be Cool » avec Asher Roth qui fait monter la dose en glucide d'un disque plutôt acidulé. Le succès de Surfers Paradise n'est pas garanti pour autant sur un créneau où les réputations se font et se défont à la vitesse d'un tweet mais, au moins, Cody Simpson aura t'il défendu ses chances avec un disque qui lui ressemble.
